How a permanent resident can lose his or her status

Securing your green card, which makes you a permanent resident of the United States, is a lengthy process. Once you have this clearance, you likely won't want to relinquish it anytime soon. If that's the case, you will want to know what can cause you to lose your green card status in Houston, Texas, so you can avoid any issues with it.

Should you decide to leave the United States to visit family abroad, go to school abroad, take a vacation or work abroad, you need to notify the country that it is only a temporary trip. If you fail to show that the trip is temporary, it can lead to you losing your permanent resident status.

Make sure that while you are out of the country you still file your income tax returns. This is important because if you fail to file, you will be viewed as someone who is abandoning his or her permanent residency status. If you do file those returns, make sure you don't mark yourself as a 'nonimmigrant' on them or this will revoke your green card as well.

You can voluntarily lose your permanent residence status by applying to become a naturalized citizen. Once you go through this process and are approved, you no longer need a green card and are free to travel in and out of the country without risk of losing the ability to return.

Being deported because you lost your green card is scary. You might have had a lapse in judgment or simply forgot what you had to do to remain a permanent resident. Make sure you know all the rules before leaving the country, even if it is for a temporary trip.
